SWIRL’s Karl Zimmermann places fifth at 2021 Head of the Charles Rowing regatta in Boston

Karl Zimmermann, PhD candidate, with former UBC varsity rowing teammates Kevin Chung (cox), Karl Zimmermann (stroke), Mike Anderson, Davey Ross, and Ryan Beach (bow), placed fifth in the alumni coxed fours event at the 57th Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, Massachusetts last week (October 23, 2021). Congratulations Karl!

The UBC Alumni crew raced in Event 31- Men’s Alumni 4+. While starting at 17th in the field, the crew passed eight boats along their way to finishing in a time of 17 minutes and 25.9 seconds. A very competitive event, the crew was excited to come top half (which guarantees an entry for the 2022 race), and to have had the chance to line up against top crews from around the World.

After two years without rowing, the crewmates came out of retirement to train together over summer and fall 2021 in preparation for the race, which is the largest three-day rowing regatta in the World. The 2021 event saw 11,000 competitors over three days from October 22-24, 2021. The Head of the Charles Regatta has been running annually since 1965 and attracts nearly a quarter of a million spectators along the banks and bridges of the Charles River in Boston.
